Newcastle Climate
Like much of the east coast, Newcastle has a humid sub-tropical climate, with rain generally higher in late autumn and winter. Warm temperatures and moisture are ideal for pests to breed, which is why infestations can get quickly out of control. As you move inland from the coast, the summer temperatures get warmer and the winter temperatures get lower, but the generally mild winters means that pests are active all year round.
Newcastle – Key Pests
Other than termites, which should always be the number one concern for homeowners, the main pests in the Newcastle area are spiders, ants and cockroaches. Rodents can also be a problem in the cooler months
Like many cities on the east coast, one of the main species of termite is Schedorhinotermes. Although it does not cause damage as quickly as some species, the challenging in achieving control with Schedorhinotermes is that they have multiple nests as part of the same colony. Which means even if you kill the nest attacking your home, there’s always another nest ready to move in. As such it’s important to install a termite protection system around your home, in addition to having annual termite inspections, in order to prevent a termite attack.
Newcastle – Key Facts
Newcastle is the 7th largest city in Australia and is a city built on coal mined from the surrounding Hunter Valley. Based around the mouth of the Hunter river, Newcastle is the largest coal exporting port in the world.
Newcastle was discovered by European settlers in 1797 and within a couple of years they took advantage of the deep water port and abundant natural resources and started to export coal.
Newcastle also developed a significant ship-building area in the 20th Century, but that has since diminished with coal export remaining the main business.
