The name Morisset (which has seen plenty of variation in spelling over the years) is taken from James Thomas Morisseta Commandant who is said to have camped under a tree by the lakeside after completing the first overland journey from Newcastle to Sydney, back in 1823. The same tree is now identified by a commemorative plaque. Subsequent European settlement saw Morisset become a centre for sawmilling and the building of the railway system. Traditionally, the land is the home of the Awabakal people.
The major attraction of the suburb is the Lake Macquarie State Conservation Areawith its coves, lagoon and picturesque headlands attracting walkers, kayakers and families.
