How we get rid of cockroaches > Professional Cockroach Treatments

As with all our pest treatments we start with a thorough inspection to fully understand the nature of the problem. Identification of the cockroach species causing the problem and potential hiding spots are vital for us to determine the best cockroach treatment.

Generally speaking the type of treatment we carry out will depend on whether we are dealing with a large cockroach species (which typically live outside, under the house or in the drains) or small cockroach species, which only live inside.

With large cockroach species we try to eliminate any cockroaches inside the house and prevent further cockroaches entering the building. Cockroach sprays and powders will be the main component of our treatment.

For small cockroach species, such as the German cockroach, it is important to identify all the cockroach hiding places and eliminate the entire population. Cockroach baits (cockroach gels) and dusts will be the main products for small cockroaches.

Cockroach spray and powder treatments

Large cockroaches will generally live in the rood void, the sub-floor (if you have one), in drains, bins and the garden around your home. We will treat these areas with a long-lasting spray and blow insecticide powder into the roof void and sub-floor to eliminate the cockroaches and provide long lasting protection. We will also carry out a treatment around the perimeter of the home to prevent any cockroaches entering the building and carry out room treatments as required.

Cockroach baits and dusts

Cockroach baits are the smart way to eliminate cockroach problems, especially German cockroach problems where it is not always possible to find all their hiding places. We place small dots of bait around the infested area near suspected hiding places – in cracks, crevices, under sinks, dishwashers, microwaves, fridges and other electrical appliances.

Foraging cockroaches feed on the bait, which consists of an attractive food and slow acting insecticide. When the adult cockroaches return to the hiding places the insecticide is passed on to the juvenile cockroaches, which eat their vomit and faeces (just when you thought cockroaches couldn’t get more disgusting!).

From a safety point of view, in or near electrical areas we will use insecticide dusts.

Cockroach prevention tips

When we inspect your home, we will also highlight any actions you should take to help prevent a cockroach problem in the future such as fixing leaks, not leaving pet food out and ensuring insect screens are well-fitted.

Safety concerns?

We will always discuss any safety concerns you may have before carrying out a treatment. If we are carrying out a spray treatment, it will be necessary to keep children and pets out of the area until the treatment is dry. We always choose the products with the best safety and environmental profile.

What to expect from our cockroach treatments?

Large cockroach treatments have an immediate impact with dead cockroaches continuing to appear in the following few days. Our treatments generally last at least 6 months.

For small cockroach treatments, it can take up to 2 weeks for baits to eliminate the cockroach population and in cases of severe infestation a second visit may be required around 3-4 weeks from initial treatment.

What are the signs of an cockroach problem?

Seeing a cockroach is an obvious sign of a potential problem. If it’s a single large cockroach, it may just be a stray cockroach that has come in from outside, but if you spot a small cockroach, it’s likely you have a cockroach infestation.

With most of the young cockroaches hiding back in the harbourage, for every cockroach you see, it’s safe to assume there are 20 or more back in their harbourage. In addition,  cockroaches are nocturnal, so if you see a cockroach during the day, it means all the hiding places are already overcrowded!

Here are some other signs you may have a cockroach problem:

Cockroach droppings and spotting

Large cockroach droppings are dark, oval shaped, about 1-2 in diameter, often found in a groups. Small cockroaches, such as German cockroaches will often leave visible brown spots on the surfaces where they rest and hide.

Egg sacs

Cockroach egg sacs (ootheca) are brown cylindrical cases which contain 20-50 eggs depending on the species. When the baby cockroaches are ready to hatch the ootheca splits open. The ootheca are often laid in cardboard boxes (which cockroaches love) – a common way cockroaches are brought into the home.

Shed skins

Cockroaches grow by moulting. Every few weeks, young cockroaches will shed their skin until they become an adult. When they emerge from their old skins, their new skins are white and soft which allows them to grow before it hardens. You may spot these old, shed skins if you have a significant cockroach infestation.

Cockroach damage

Most people don’t think about the damage that cockroaches can do, they just think about how dirty they are. But cockroaches will eat anything! Not only will they eat any type of food, but will chew boxes, papers and clothes.

Cockroach odour

If you are suffering from a cockroach infestation you may notice a musty, slightly unpleasant smell. Once you know what it is, you’ll never forget it!

More cockroach information

Cockroaches are described as large cockroaches or small cockroaches. The large cockroach species include the American cockroach and Australian cockroach, with the key small cockroaches being the German cockroach and brown-banded cockroach.

Cockroaches are considered “dirty” for good reason. Large cockroach species often live around garbage and sewers and as a result carry a range of microbes which can cause illness in humans. Bacteria such Salmonella and E.coli and can easily be transferred to food and food preparation surfaces when cockroaches walk across the surface.

Cockroach skins and cockroach droppings contain allergens that can have serious health consequences. One study from the US estimated that 10% of childhood asthma was caused by cockroach infestations in inner city apartment blocks.
