Our Termite Treatment Process

All our termite treatments are carried out according to Australian Standards 3660.2.

The treatment follows 4 key steps:
  1. Carry out a comprehensive termite inspection
  2. Propose and agree a termite treatment plan based on the inspection results
  3. Eliminate active termites from the building
  4. Install a termite management system to protect the home into the future
In making termite treatment recommendations, we take into account the following:
  • Termite species present and level of infestation
  • Building construction type and any issues
  • Soil types
  • Environmental factors
  • Any cost considerations
  • Personal preferences

Unlike some other firms which push only one type of treatment, Rebel Pest Professionals are experienced in the full range of treatments available and will make the best recommendation for your particular situation. Often we may present more than one option for consideration.

The cost of a termite treatment depends on a number of factors, which is why we can’t give out quotes over the phone. We will need to organise a site visit to provide a FREE quote.

Termite Treatment Products

Find the termite nest (if possible)

The first step in any termite treatment is to try and find the termite nest causing the problem.

Any visible nests will be treated and destroyed through direct nest injections.

We will also drill trees and tree stumps on the property to see if we can find any termite nests. If we do, these will also be injected with insecticide.

However, since the nests are often underground or hidden inside trees, it is quite common that we cannot locate the nest. And even if we can locate the nest, there is no guarantee that it is the same nest that is attacking your home. As such, it is also important to treat any active termites in the building.

Eliminating active termites from the building

We will use a range of products to eliminate active termites from buildings – dusts, foams and baits. The choice of product depends on the species present, level of activity and location of the infestation. The time taken to eliminate termites from the building depends on the species present, product used and level of infestation, and takes anywhere between a couple of weeks and several months.

Baits – which we don’t use for all termite species – have the advantage that they can actually destroy the nest attacking the building, as well as eliminating termites from the building. Termites feed on an attractive bait which we place in the areas where they are feeding. The bait contains a slow acting insecticide. The termites take the bait back to the nest where it is fed to their nest mates, including the queen which lays all the eggs. Over a period of several weeks the whole colony is destroyed.

Termite management systems

Once termites have been eliminated from the building, it’s important to install a termite management system around the perimeter of the building to protect it from future termite attacks.

There are two types of termite management systems – soil treatments and termite monitoring / baiting systems.

Soil treatments are the more traditional treatment and involve treating the soil around and under the house. Sometimes this will involve drilling through any paths or pavers around the building to inject the chemical. Such treatments can last between 5-8 years depending on the situation and chemical used. These treated zones create a “barrier” which either repels or kills individual termites that come into contact with the treatment, but do not kill the termite nest.

Generally we prefer to recommend termite baiting systems as they actually kill any active termite colonies in the area and are not affected by rainfall and flooding. However, depending on the situation we may still recommend a soil treatment.

Termite monitoring and baiting systems consist of plastic housing installed in the ground around your home. Traditional monitoring systems (such as Exterra) contain samples of wood. If termites are active in the area they will start feeding on this wood. This activity is picked up in the regular inspections (no less than 6 weekly) and then a termite bait is added which the termites feed on, ultimately killing the colony.

Rebel Pest Professionals also use the latest innovations in termite baiting systems – AlwaysActive and Trelona. These are different to the traditional termite monitoring and baiting systems in that they do not use wood to monitor termite activity followed up with bait placement – they simply contain termite bait from the point of installation, meaning they are always active, protecting your home.

Baiting systems, when monitored by our experts, will last a lifetime.

Tips to prevent termites

Here are some ways you can help reduce the risk of termite attack at your property :

Remove stored timber, debris from under, in and around the propertyStoring timber against or under your property on a soil sub-floor will provide termites an attractive food source and nesting site. It can also hide evidence of termites invading your home. Remove any timber and/or debris away from the house.

Repair leaking taps and pipesThese include leaking taps, pipes and hot water overflow pipes under or around your property. Repairing these will reduce moisture levels, which attracts termites to your property.

Ensure that vents to subfloor areas are never blockedPoor ventilation in the sub-floor areas of your property will result in high humidity and moisture levels. Good ventilation and extraction fans where necessary are essential to reduce the risk from termite

Divert all hot water services & air conditioning overflows away from the side of the houseEnsure stormwater runoff is properly connected.

Use only termite treated timber in garden beds, retaining walls and fence postsDo not use untreated timbers to form garden beds or retaining walls, as these provide termites with an attractive food source.

Construct timber fences and support posts with a 50mm clearance between the timbers and the soilOften the bases of timber fence palings and/or sub-floor timbers breach the soil surface. This allows termites access without detection. Best practice would be to use metal stirrups in the foundations.

Keep a clearance of plants/shrubs from sides of the propertyPlants/shrubs growing against the side of your property make it difficult to detect termites entering the building. Try to have at least a 30cm space between property and any plants/shrubs. Avoid planting trees that have strong root systems that are likely to travel under your property (termites can use these as a highway)

Avoid using watering systems around the perimeter of the hometermites love moisture and it’s important to keep the area around the building dry

Remove dead trees/stumpsDead trees/stumps are ideal areas for termites to nest in. Remove these or have them treated to reduce the risk to your property.

Building alterations or additions can make previous termite protection ineffectiveAdding a deck, pergola, tiling a patio, concrete slab extensions, or new plumbing will require additional termite protection. Talk to us before you start any new renovations or landscaping.
