How do we decide on the best termite pest control treatment for your home?

How do we find and destroy a termite nest?
The first step in any treatment is to try and find the termite nest causing the problem.
Any visible nests will be treated and destroyed through direct nest injection of insecticide.
We will also drill trees and tree stumps on the property to see if we can find any termite nests. If we do, these will also be injected with insecticide.
However, since the nests are often underground or hidden inside trees, it is quite common that we cannot locate the nest. And even if we can locate the nest, there is no guarantee that it is the same nest that is attacking your home. As such, it is also important to treat any active termites in the building.
How we get rid of termites from inside the building?
We will use a range of products to eliminate active termites from buildings – dusts, foams and baits. The choice of product depends on the species present, level of activity and location of the infestation. The time taken to eliminate termites from the building depends on the species present, product used and level of infestation, and takes anywhere between a couple of weeks and several months.
Baits – which we don’t use for all termite species – have the advantage that they can actually destroy the nest attacking the building, as well as eliminating termites from the building. Termites feed on an attractive bait which we place in the areas where they are feeding. The bait contains a slow acting insecticide. The termites take the bait back to the nest where it is fed to their nest mates, including the queen which lays all the eggs. Over a period of several weeks the whole colony is destroyed. Long lasting termite protection for your home
Once termites have been eliminated from the building, it’s important to install a termite management system around the perimeter of the building to protect it from future termite attacks. Basically, there are two types of termite management systems – soil treatments and termite monitoring / baiting systems.
We always get asked, “Which is the Best Termite Treatment?” It depends.
Soil termite treatments
Soil treatments are the more traditional treatment and involve treating the soil around and under the house. Sometimes this will involve drilling through any paths or pavers around the building to inject the chemical. Such treatments can last between 5-8 years depending on the situation and chemical used. These treated zones create a “barrier” which either repels or kills individual termites that come into contact with the treatment, but do not kill the termite nest.
We sometimes install a termite reticulation system, which can be used to top up these soil treatments into the future. This is particularly useful if hard surfaces will be laid over the treated soil.
Generally we prefer to recommend termite baiting systems as they actually kill any active termite colonies in the area and are not affected by rainfall and flooding. However, depending on the situation we may still recommend a soil treatment.
Termite monitoring and baiting systems
Termite monitoring and baiting systems consist of plastic housing installed in the ground around your home. Traditional monitoring systems (such as Exterra) contain samples of wood. If termites are active in the area they will start feeding on this wood. This activity is picked up in the regular inspections (no less than 6 weekly) and then a termite bait is added which the termites feed on, ultimately killing the colony.
Rebel Pest Professionals also use the latest innovations in termite baiting systems – AlwaysActive and Trelona. These are different to the traditional termite monitoring and baiting systems in that they do not use wood to monitor termite activity followed up with bait placement – they simply contain termite bait from the point of installation, meaning they are always active, protecting your home. How long does a termite treatment last?
Soil treatments last many years. The duration of protection depends on the product used and the soil and environmental conditions a the property. Typically a treatment will last at leat 5 years, although this can vary between 3-6 years depending on the soil type, product used and your particular situation. All treatments come with a warranty, as long conducive conditions noted in the inspection report are remedied and you also have annual termite inspections. Apart from checking the building, this will also check to make sure the treatment hasn’t been compromised (eg. by landscaping).
Termite baiting systems will provide continuous protection as long as they are regularly maintained and the required inspection regime followed.
Can treatments be done in the rain?
Termites can be treated inside buildings no matter the weather. The installation of termite baiting systems outside the home can also be carried out whilst its raining, except in heavy rain (as holes become difficult to dig and fill with water). Soil treatments can also generally be carried out in light rain. Soil treatments during heavy rain become problematic – digging becomes difficult and trenches fill with water. There is also the danger that any insecticide applied will be (partially) washed away.
Can termites come back after treatment?
Yes, they can! Termites are everywhere – 80% of homes have a termite nest within 25 m of the building. Even if the nest that was attacking your home was destroyed, there are always other termite nests in the area looking for food, which could attack your home.
Once termites have been eliminated from the building, it is therefore essential to install a termite management system around (and under the building), such as a soil treatment or baiting system. These systems will provide the long termite protection against termites.

When checking licenses it is important to understand that licenses and insurance should specify they are allowed to carry out termite / timber pest work – this work is separate to “pest control”.
