The Awabakal people are the traditional owners of the area.
It was first called Church Hill before being called Prospect Hill, before finally just The HillIt was one of the first areas to be settled, being adjacent to the centre of Newcastle (now the CBD).
There are a number of historic buildings, including Jesmond House (see banner image) built in the 1880s and Beacon Tower built in 1865.Beacon tower was a navigation beacon to guide ships into port. Originally it was only 7m tall but was extended to 20m in 1877 when it became obscured by the increasing number of buildings.
